Today I’m going to show you the best hog hunting scope.

In fact:

I’ve hand- tested over 10 scopes alone for this review.

The best part?

I’ve sorted the scopes by use. So whether you’re on a budget or need the best night vision scope for hog hunting, you’ll find it here.

Let’s dive in!

The 4 Best Hog Hunting Scopes

If you’re pressed on time, here’s a quick list of the best scope for hog hunting:

  1. Pulsar Trail XP38 1.2-9.6×32: Best Thermal Scope for Hog Hunting
  2. ATN X-Sight II HD 5-20: Best Night Vision Scope For Hog Hunting
  3. Leupold FX-II Ultralight 2.5×20: Best Compact Rifle Scope for the Money
  4. Weaver Classic 4×28: Best Scope for the Budget

1. Pulsar Trail XP38 1.2-9.6×32: Best Thermal Scope for Hog Hunting

This Pulsar Trail XP38 1.2-9.6×32 is the best thermal scope for hog hunting.

In fact:

I’ve used it for hunting not only hogs but also coyotes, foxes, rabbits, and a variety of other game, both in the daytime and nighttime (which you can’t do with a night vision optic).

By the end of this review, you’ll know if the Pulsar Trail XP38 is for you.

Let’s get started!

Image Clarity & Reticle

The trail XP38 produces one of the sharpest digital images I’ve ever seen in a thermal scope.

It uses a revolutionary thermal imaging sensor with an excellent 640×480 thermal detector pixel resolution and a 17UM core pixel size. That means it can detect heat as far as 1,500 yards away.

With the XP38, I can change between white-hot or black-hot features, which further identifies targets.

Personally, I prefer White Hot when my scene contains inanimate objects with a broad range of temperatures from hot to cold. I then use black hot when I want to view sharper details.

Speaking of viewing…

Recording and Streaming

The Trail XP38 is so advanced that it enables you to receive and record footage in real-time via the built-in storage and Stream Vision app.

The app also allows you to remotely control the scope with your smartphone from a distance, stream your videos LIVE on social media, or transfer the footage directly to your personal computer.

But wait.

Forgot to hit record? No worries. Recoil Activated Recording (RAV) has you covered for 3 seconds before the trigger is pulled, so you never worry about missing a shot.

Eye Relief

The eye relief is under 2 inches.

A bellows eyecup covers your eye to block any light leakage, sealing any distractions from ambient lighting.

If the Trail XP38 were a regular riflescope, I would say it has a minimal eye-box. Your eye has to remain in an exact location to maintain that clear focus.

With a little getting used to, I had no issues with the eye box or getting scope bite.

Durability

Trust me when I tell you this: The Trail XP 38 doesn’t disappoint.

It’s been proven capable of handling high powered firearm recoil, up to .375-cal. I’ve used it with 9.3х64, .30-06, .300, .375. cartridges so I can personally confirm that first hand.

Plus, this scope is highly resistant to frost, fog, dust, and fully waterproof. I’ve used it under different field conditions, and although it is a lightweight scope, I’ve never had to worry about it breaking.

Zeroing

Zeroing was surprisingly easy.

The best part?

The Trail XP38 allows you to save three individual zeroing profiles, including different reticles, at up to 5 distances, in the scope’s memory.

This means that you can set the scope up for three different rifles and swap it out between them without needing to make any significant changes in settings.

I’ve shuffled the Trail XP38 between three of my favorite rifles and brought it to dozens of hunts, and it never had issues holding a zero.

Magnification

This scope is equipped with a variable magnification of 1.2x-9.6x combined with 2x, 4x, and 8x magnification.

It also comes with a unique “Picture-in-Picture” feature.

This feature puts the zoomed-in image in the top portion of the display while still showing the zoomed-out image behind it.

It allows me to see a more detailed image in the aiming area without obstructing the field of view so that I can take a shot and keep an eye out on the background.

Mounting & Accessories

The Trail XP38 comes with a standard Weaver-style mount making it easy to set up on your rifle.

Also included in the box:

A battery charger (any micro USB works too!), a carrying case, user manual, cleaning cloth, hex wrench, remote control with encoding, and a USB cable.

It also comes with a built-in rangefinder so there’s no need to get one.

Is the Pulsar Trail XP38 worth it?

Overall, the Pulsar Trail XP38 is an incredible thermal riflescope with endless unique features for less than its competitors’ price tag.

It’s got:

  • 1.2x-9.6x magnification
  • Built-in laser rangefinder
  • Picture-in-Picture feature
  • Recoil Activated Recording
  • Detailed, clear thermal image
  • Ten different digital reticles to choose from
  • Frostproof, fog proof, dustproof, and fully waterproof.
  • Easy recording and streaming to your smart device

To top it all off, the Trail XP38 comes with Pulsar’s 3 Year Warranty.

If you want to take your hog hunting game to the “Predator” level, get the Pulsar Trail XP38 1.2-9.6×32. It will definitely be a valuable asset in your arsenal.

2. ATN X-Sight II HD 5-20: Best Night Vision Scope For Hog Hunting

When it’s time for hunting hogs, I don’t want to waste any time worrying about my scope.

I want one that’s going to have great night vision, perfect clarity, and all the bells and whistles. I recently picked up the ATN X Sight II 5-20, and it’s definitely a contender.

It’s got all the standard must haves and the extras are incredible. There are a few pretty big drawbacks though.

Keep reading and I’ll give you the rundown.

Glass Clarity & Reticle

The clarity is very dependent on your distance.

Up to 5x mag it’s crystal clear. Although it goes up to 20x, past 5x the clarity quickly deteriorates. Past 200 yards or so and the digital image kicks in, and it’s just not as good as a conventional scope.

It’ll do, but expect some graininess.

It comes with a standard duplex reticle.

The selling point here is the HD1080 ATN L130 sensor and the recoil activated video (RAV). This automatically records high quality video of before and after you pull the trigger for you to record your victory.

Your friends will never accuse you of exaggerating a hunt again!

Eye Relief & Eye Box

The eye relief is a meager 2.6”, not something you want on a rifle. If you try to mount this on anything with a kick, you’re gonna lose an eye.

I found the eye box awkward and cramped until I bought a rail extender. That made it a lot more bearable.

Fyland Riser Mount, Tactical High Profile Picatinny Weaver Rail Flat Top Mount Adaptor and Riser for Scopes and Optics, 0.94' H x 5.7' L, 14 Slots
283 Reviews
Fyland Riser Mount, Tactical High Profile Picatinny Weaver Rail Flat Top Mount Adaptor and Riser for Scopes and Optics, 0.94" H x 5.7" L, 14 Slots
  • ★ High profile 0.96 inch high riser mount, allows for sight clearance over front sights.
  • ★ 5.7 inches in length with 14 Picatinny rail slots, Picatinny rail mount will accommodate red dots, and optics, flashlight or laser sight.
  • ★ Thumb Tightening System and locking plate for easy and quick installation.

Again, the best feature isn’t its standard offerings but instead it’s high tech additions. The ballistics calculator is incredible.

I just plug in my wind readings and the distance and it automatically adjusts my point of impact so I know I’m gonna get a centered shot.

Durability

It’s water resistant and has a solid frame construction.

Unfortunately, because it’s digital, there’s a lot more that can go wrong with it internally. You’ll want to keep the manual handy and have a firm grasp of technology before you buy this scope.

Elevation & Windage Knobs

It was easy to find zero at 100 yards.

The scope has a built in profile manager too which means you can have a new profile for each firearm you use it on. I found it incredibly handy to not have to reset it every time I remounted it.

The focus knobs are really stiff at first, but after using them a few times they loosen up nicely. It’s held zero really well every time I’ve used it.

Parallax & Magnification

The mag is 3-14x and 5-20x and the objective is 50mm and 85mm respectively.

The scope is digital above 5x, so the view can start to get pixelated, although I found that I could still see my target pretty well.

For me, the night vision was incredible, and significantly better than daytime hunting. The IR Illuminator makes hunting hogs a breeze and I shot them exactly where I intended.

The night-time video comes out crisp and sharp too.

Mounting & Rings

It comes with an interchangeable picatinny mount, but some have reported it being flimsy. I found that the scope was too heavy for the screws to properly hold the mount. It won’t work with any rings mounts.

An absolute must have is an extended battery pack, because this thing eats batteries like they’re candy. Do yourself the favor and just grab it.

ATN Power Weapon Kit 20,000mAh Battery Pack w/USB Connector, provides up to 22 hrs of continuous use
  • Power weapon kit - Provides 20,000mAh of power to operate your ATN Smart Scope, instead of basic AA batteries
  • USB to micro USB w/L shape Connector - is designed to be used with our ATN Smart Scopes
  • Water resistant rubber seal - seals the media port from environmental conditions

You should probably snag a larger memory card too if you’re wanting to record your hunts. It comes standard with a 4GB, but I put a 64GB micro SD card in to make sure I didn’t run out of memory.

  • Class 10 for Full HD video recording and playback. Storage temperature: -40ºF to 185ºF (-40ºC to 85ºC)

Is the ATN X-Sight HD 5-20 worth it?

Honestly, it feels like ATN was so focused on the extras that they didn’t nail the necessary things.

It’s got plenty of things going for it, such as:

  • RAV feature
  • Mag 3-14x / 5-20x
  • Ballistics Calculator
  • E-Compass inside the scope
  • E-Barometer for precise wind data
  • Wifi & Bluetooth compatible, connects to ATN Obsidian app
  • IR Illuminator comes standard and is amazing for night hunting

But those drawbacks are pretty rough:

  • 2.6” eye relief
  • Weight of 4.4 lbs is heavy
  • Glitchy if the latest firmware isn’t installed
  • Lack of clarity after 5x mag because it’s digital
  • Incredibly weak battery life: If your batteries die, your scope is useless

It’s got a two year warranty, which is nice, but their customer service is a nightmare to get a hold of. If you can get in touch via email they’ll get you sorted out, but I’ve seen a lot of people have issues with them.

This is an amazing gun for night hunting, especially feral hogs. The IR illuminator provides phenomenal sight up to 200 yards and the RAV feature is pretty awesome. Being able to replay the hunt for your buddies is a neat selling point

In short: if you’re tech savvy, the ATN X-Sight II HD 5-20 is a great scope, and you should definitely try it. You’ll definitely have to play with it and tweak it to get it perfect, but if you can deal with the battery life and glitches, it’s a good night vision scope.

3. Leupold FX-II Ultralight 2.5×20: Best Compact Rifle Scope for the Money

Before I found the Leupold FX-ll, you could say I was a little lost when it came to my gear.

Let me set the scene—I’m a weekend hunter. All weekend hunters live by the knowledge of one, simple concept.

Nothing compares to waking up, a thick cup of coffee steaming up the den, and the excitement of a nice day of game ahead—boiling up inside of you.

But getting to the point where I could confidently say that was a bit of a chore.

To sum things up: finding the proper gear can be hard.

To tell the complete and honest truth, I wasn’t as cocksure of my gear as I usually pretended to be. Until I found the Leupold.

The Leupold FX-ll Ultralight 2.5x20mm Riflescope is the best steal I ever got my hands on, because now I can say I’ve got some solid gear—no hesitation.

Glass Clarity & Reticle

Built with an Index Matched Lens System, I can always count on incredibly bright and clear images with knife sharp resolutions.

The Leupold exclusive, ion-assisted lens coating on the exterior lens, means a nice, durable scope for the long-haul.

Which also means I can take my new buddy anywhere—no sweat.

The first thing I ever discovered when I started really beefing up my gear, is that: no matter how great all the extra perks are, the heart of any scope is the glass used in the lens.

The quality of the glass can mean the difference between a nice, durable scope, and a scope you wish you never wasted your money on.

From one hurt wallet to another, please protect your coin from what you buy.

Another handy perc that graces the Leupold is the WideDuplex reticle, inspired by the Leupold designed Duplex.

The WideDuplex reticle is absolutely perfect for: lever action rifles, scout rifles, or for any other time I want to mount my optics in front of the receiver.

Even cooler, th WideDuplex reticle means a larger center opening and a quick target acquisition—which complement my hazy hunts like a charm.

Even if I wasn’t already completely assured, this scope comes with a DiamondCoat lens coating, securing extra protection from my personal wear and tear.

Eye Relief & Eye Box

Though it does have a slightly lower eye relief at 4.9, I’ve never been more comfortable shooting.

The classic lockable eyepiece makes it so much easier getting a clear shot at a comfortable angle.

I learned quickly that a good eyepiece is essential when mounting the rifle scope, because you have to take into account how far your bolt handle is coming up when reloading.

Durability

Being as rough as I am, you can trust me when I say this is one durable scope.

Thanks to the proprietary Nitrogen Fill Process, I am guaranteed waterproof and fog proof protection.

Protecting the scope from harsh conditions while also yielding a clear line of sight—regardless of what kind of weather I’m stomping around in.

Elevation & Windage Knobs

The elevation and windage adjustment (MOA) holds zero in a crisp and easy to use capacity, so I can always feel comfortable setting up a shot.

Although there are no special perks to really get me excited, you can bet some serious money that I always get a solid, smooth zeroing experience.

The Leupold proudly holsters a 2.5 x magnification—and let me tell you, definitely have one hell of a time with a line of sight like that.

Parallax & Magnification

The downfall of this scope is definitely the parallax—I noticed some inconsistencies, but not so much to the point where I wasn’t able to feel like I had a good day.

Mounting & Rings

This scope doesn’t come with any mountings or rings, but I would highly suggest investing in some. Personally, I went for the Vortex Cantilever Mount, 3” offset.

Is the Leupold FX-ll Ultralight 2.5×20 worth it?

Overall, this is a solid scope. The Gold Ring Lifetime Guarantee really means you have nothing to lose. With features such as:

  • An Index Matched Lens System
  • The Classic, lockable eyepiece
  • Guaranteed wear and tear

This scope gives me all the confidence I need for a nice, dewy Sunday morning hunt.

4. Weaver Classic 4×28: Best Scope for the Budget

The Weaver Classic 4×28 is the best rifle scope for shopping on a budget.

It’s got an incredibly durable design, fully multi-coated lenses that provide a crystal clear picture, and is great for rapid target acquisition.

But you might be wondering:

Is a scope this cheap even going to be worth it?

Keep reading below for the answer.

Glass Clarity and Reticle

For a $200 dollar optic, the glass isn’t too bad.

The lenses are fully multi coated and crystal clear, giving me a perfect picture no matter where I was. Even as it got closer to dusk, I had no trouble seeing my target.

This scope has a Dual X reticle, which is clean and easy to use. I was able to easily shoot at 100 yards, and the SFP made it easy to fire accurately on the move.

Eye Relief and Eye Box

The eye relief is an insanely generous 9.5”.

With the lenses being so clear and fully multi coated, eye fatigue was a complete non-issue. I also noticed no blurriness near the edges, which means every shot is a clear one.

The eye box is as generous as the eye relief, so centering my picture was an easy task.

Durability

The Weaver Classic is one of the strongest scopes I’ve purchased.

I dunked it in water and banged it around, and yet it never lost my zero or showed any signs of damage.

How?

This scope is made of aircraft-grade aluminum and is made from a single tube for strength. It’s also fully waterproof, shockproof, and fogproof.

Elevation and Windage Knobs

The turrets on the Weaver Classic are low, but give nice audible clicks when adjusted. They are firm and don’t change even when jostled.

The best part?

It took me only 3 shots to find my zero, and after 180 rounds it was still holding zero.

Parallax and Magnification

There is no parallax adjustment, and it is factory set at 50 yards. Despite this, I still had no issues with it even when shooting at 100 yards.

Magnification is also set at 4x. This limits long distance and extreme close quarters options, but it was perfect for me. This still gives great range while letting me quickly switch targets on the move without needing to adjust.

Mounting and Rings

Given the extremely low price, it’s not surprising that the Weaver Classic does not come with a mount or rings.

So depending on your setup, I’d recommend:

Weaver 1-inch Medium Rings

WEAVER Quad Lock 1-Inch Medium Detachable Rings
  • Quadlock Detachable Aluminum Rings
  • Two straps and four screws provide added gripping power
  • Lightweight, all-aluminum rings

and Weaver Thumbnut Spr 1” Mount.

  • Optimal height and forward cantilever for AR platform rifles

Is the Weaver Classic 4×28 worth it?

If you’re looking for a solid rifle scope that can handle harsh conditions without sacrificing quality or your bank account, then I’d recommend the Weaver Classic.

Here’s why:

  • Extreme durability
  • Fantastic eye relief
  • Crystal clear picture
  • Handles harsh recoil

To sum it up: this scope is worth far more than its price.

It’s an incredibly cheap scope that prioritizes its durability and clear crisp lenses. Weaver also offers a limited lifetime warranty, so as long as you are the original owner and have the receipt, you can send it back to be fixed if broken.

This scope is under $200, so it’s not designed to blow your mind or wow you with crazy features. However, it’s a very solid scope that performs just as well as one worth 2-3 times as much.

So if you need to get into the world of hunting on a budget, look no further than the Weaver Classic 4×28 scope.
